Introduction

Indonesia is often referred to as an agricultural country because it has vast land and abundant natural resources. Most of the food needs come from the work of farmers. However, ironically, many farmers actually live in difficult economic conditions. The question arises: why do farmers remain poor in a country that depends on the agricultural sector?

Inequality in the Distribution Chain

One of the main causes is inequality in the distribution chain of agricultural products. Farmers usually sell their crops to middlemen at low prices. Meanwhile, prices on the market can be much higher. As a result, the biggest profits are not enjoyed by farmers, but by intermediaries.

Limited Access to Capital

Many small farmers have difficulty obtaining business capital. To buy seeds, fertilizer and agricultural equipment, they often have to borrow money at high interest rates. This condition makes farmers trapped in a cycle of debt that is difficult to break.

Dependence on Natural Factors

Agriculture is very dependent on natural conditions such as weather, rainfall and seasons. When crops fail due to floods, drought or pest attacks, farmers have to bear huge losses without any guarantee of income.

Lack of Access to Technology and Education

Some farmers still use traditional methods that are less efficient. The lack of access to modern technology and information makes agricultural productivity lower than its actual potential.

Land Function Transfer

The decreasing agricultural land due to industrial and housing development is also a serious problem. Farmers lost their main source of income and were forced to turn to other jobs which were not necessarily better.

Not Optimal Policies

Government policies in supporting farmers' welfare still have many shortcomings. Starting from fertilizer prices, distribution of aid, to protection of unequal harvest prices.

Efforts to Overcome Farmer Poverty

Several steps that can be taken to improve farmers' welfare include:

  • Improve the distribution system so that farmers get a fair price
  • Provide access to capital at low interest
  • Developing modern agricultural technology
  • Increase training and education for farmers
  • Protect agricultural land from conversion
  • Set a minimum price policy for harvested crops

Closing

Farmer poverty in agricultural countries is a complex problem involving various factors, from economics to policy. If not addressed immediately, this condition could threaten food security in the future. Therefore, cooperation between government, society and the private sector is needed to create a fairer and more sustainable agricultural system.
